Area Seniors Compete for National Title Playing Wii Bowl
Natick, MA October 30, 2009_Usually Nintendo® Wii™ provides friendly entertainment for residents at Whitney Place Assisted Living Residences in Natick. But once a week, racking up strikes and converting spares turns more serious, especially since a national championship is on the line.
Team Whitney Place, led by Coach Jessica Sousa, Campus Recreation Coordinator at the assisted living community, has joined more than 180 teams from 24 states who are seeking to claim National Senior League’s first-of-its-kind championship playing Wii Bowl.
"We’re ecstatic to be representing both Whitney Place and Natick as we compete to bring home the national title," said Sousa. "Our residents have teamed up to compete against some of the best Wii bowlers across the country. There’s a lot of pride at stake each match, making it much more than just playing Wii."
Whitney Place’s eight-member lineup includes residents Arnold Black, Grace Comer, Lois Harper, Jerry Levy, Millie McHugh, Eva Spadoni, Richard Strenhike and Mert Young.
Team Whitney Place kicked off league action with their first game on Tuesday, October 20. Each week, for eight weeks, through November 23, the team will bowl and track their scores online until a champion has been crowned. In their conference, residents will challenge teams from Phoenix, Ariz.; Sparta, Mich.; Manchester, N.H.; Solon, Ohio; and Philadelphia, Pa., trying to advance to the national playoffs. National Senior League, the tournament organizer, will crown a national champion following its title matchup the week of December 14.
"This has really become a community event," said Sousa. "Even if they’re not playing, residents come out to support their neighbors, and also bring friends and family to cheer for Team Whitney Place on game day."
Whitney Place Assisted Living Residences at Natick, located at Three Vision Drive, Route 9 West, provides residents with a maintenance-free lifestyle of maximum independence in a warm and friendly setting. The community includes sun-filled residences, complete with weekly housekeeping, 24-hour staffing, and priority access to on-site healthcare. Unveiling SALMON Health and Retirement
Westborough, MA September 20, 2007_ Founded in 1952 with a single nursing home in Northborough, The Salmon Family of Services has grown over the decades to become an umbrella under which Beaumont, Whitney Place, Adult Day Health, The Willows and The Child Care Centers are better known. The family owned and operated business, with locations in Natick, Northborough, Northbridge, Westborough and Worcester, is announcing a new name and logo, ‘SALMON Health and Retirement.’

Third generation Salmon family members Kate Salmon-Robinson, vice president of marketing communications and community relations, Matt Salmon, vice president of programs, quality and innovation, and Andrew Salmon, executive director of the Northbridge campus, wanted the new names and evolving logos to emphasize the company’s breadth and depth.
“We’re fortunate to have a strong heritage in the senior health and housing market, and a growing recognition for child care, made possible through the hard work of our parents, Danny and Dottie Salmon, other family members and our dedicated team of employees through the years,” says Salmon-Robinson. “‘SALMON Health and Retirement’ strengthens the positive connection between the Salmon family name and the companies people have come to trust.”
Company founder Helen Salmon, grandmother to Kate, Matt and Andrew and a resident of The Willows at Westborough, approves of the change. “The name ‘SALMON Health and Retirement’ honors our family’s traditions and values, and makes what we do very clear: we provide people with the service and solutions they need for a good life.”

SALMON purchases University Commons, names new director
Westborough, MA Sept. 2, 2008_SALMON Health and Retirement, based in Westborough, has purchased University Commons Nursing Care Center, a 164-bed nursing home and child care center located at 378 Plantation Street, Worcester. The center, previously owned by a subsidiary of UMass Memorial Health Care, will be known as Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center – University Campus and the Child Care Center there has been renamed SALMON Center for Early Education. The Worcester location will be the fifth rehabilitation and skilled nursing center for SALMON, and their third child care center.
The facility is adjacent to the University campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center. All of the employees of University Commons were retained as it became a part of SALMON Health and Retirement.
“We are delighted to have worked with SALMON Health and Retirement to complete this transaction. SALMON is one of the premier operators of nursing homes in Massachusetts. We are confident that they will provide the same extraordinary level of care to patients at University Commons that the patients and families have come to expect. The fact that all of the current employees will remain is a compliment to both organizations and a comfort to the patients and their families,” said Gary N. Lapidas, President of University Commons Nursing Care Center.
SALMON has appointed Edmund J. Taglieri, Jr., RPh, NHA, MSM, as executive director of the new Beaumont location. Taglieri has a 24-year background managing a home health agency, skilled nursing centers and most recently, the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough.
“We’re fortunate to have Ed leading our newest component,” says SALMON CEO Phil LaCasse. “His expertise and personality will ensure a smooth transition for the residents, their families and current staff members, and solid guidance for everything to come.”
The Willows at Worcester, a “premier retirement community for active adults” now under construction off Salisbury Street, is the first SALMON location in Worcester and is scheduled for occupancy in 2009. SALMON Health and Retirement was founded in 1952 and is currently managed by third-generation family members.
SALMON Health and Retirement is a family owned and operated business specializing in retirement communities, assisted living, adult day health, rehab and skilled nursing centers and child care, with locations in Natick, Northborough, Northbridge, Westborough and Worcester.
Company Vice President of Programs, Quality and Innovation Matt Salmon comments: “Because of our history serving Central Massachusetts, it seems only natural to open locations in Worcester. We have a long-standing, positive relationship with UMass Memorial Medical Center, too, so having Beaumont right next to their University Campus is a very happy coincidence.”
Kate Salmon-Robinson is SALMON’s director of marketing communications and community relations. “Beaumont has become a name associated with high quality short- and long-term care throughout the area, and we’re looking forward to serving even more of Worcester with this addition,” she says. “Having Ed Taglieri joining us there, with his skills and enthusiasm, is the icing on the cake.”
